Creating a Monitor

This topic explains how to create:

Create a New Empty Monitor

To add an empty Monitor or Monitor shell from the Reveille Admin console:

  1. From the Reveille Admin console menu, click File > New > Monitor. The New Monitor dialog appears.
    You can also display the New Monitor dialog by clicking New Item in the Reveille Admin console toolbar, then clicking Monitor, OR by right-clicking a server in the Left Navigation Pane and choosing New Monitor from its shortcut menu.
  1. In the New Monitor dialog, enter a Name for the Monitor. The name of the Monitor cannot contain spaces or any of the following special characters:  %  /\ , . : * ? < > " | &
  2. Click OK. A status dialog appears followed by the Add Monitor Tests Using Wizard dialog.
  3. Select the appropriate Wizard for the Resources and/or Tests you will add to the new Monitor. Then click OK to display the selected Wizard. Please refer to the appropriate topic in the "Using Wizards to Add Resources and Tests" section of this online help for details on completing the individual Wizard settings.
  4. If you click Cancel in the Add Monitor Tests Using Wizard dialog, you will be presented with the option to delete the new Monitor or create it without adding any Resources or Tests.

Note:  You can also add a new Monitor by copying and pasting an existing Monitor definition into the Left Navigation Pane.

Note:  When you copy and paste a Resource, you can also specify the Resource Relationship for the new Resource. You can specify the Parent and position of the new Resource in the Target Monitor. (This is similar to working with the Resource Relationships dialog.)

Create a New Monitor Based on an Existing Monitor

To create a new Monitor based on an existing Monitor:

  1. In the Left Navigation Pane, right-click the Monitor on which you are basing the new Monitor.
  2. In the shortcut menu, click New Monitor from Template. The New Monitor From Template dialog appears. The top of the dialog displays the name of the Monitor Template. This is the Monitor that you right-clicked in step 1.
  3. Select Edit Parameters after Create to display the Monitor Parameters dialog after creation of the new Monitor, in which you can view and edit any parameters contained in the original Monitor. The Monitor Parameters dialog appears only if the original Monitor contains parameters.
  4. For the Monitor "Object", replace the entry in the Name column with that of the new Monitor's name. Modify all other entries as necessary. Use the Find and Replace option to replace repeated parameters such as host name, credentials, and so on.
  5. Select Include Monitor Group Assignments to include the existing Monitor's group assignments in the new Monitor.
  6. Click Create to create the new Monitor. If you selected Edit Parameters after Create, and the original Monitor contains parameters, the Monitor Parameters dialog appears. If you are not editing parameters, skip to Step 9.
  7. Edit parameters by doing any of the following:
    • Click a Value cell to select a blank string (no value), the current value, or a new value from an existing parameter with the same name from the dropdown list.
    • Click a Monitor cell to select a blank string (no Monitor assigned), or the name of the current Monitor from the dropdown list.
    • Click a Notes cell to edit or add a note.
  8. Click Apply to save your parameter changes, or click Close to exit the dialog without saving any changes.
  9. The New Monitor From Template dialog remains open so that you can create additional Monitors based on the Monitor Template.
    • To return the settings to that of the Monitor Template's click Reset.
    • To close the window click Close.

Create a New Monitor by Copying an Existing Monitor

You can create a new Monitor by copy/paste through the Left Navigation Pane, or through the Advanced Edit dialog box. The Advanced Edit dialog box also enables you to copy more than one Monitor at a time.

To create a new Monitor on the Left Navigation Pane, select the Monitor, then click Copy on the toolbar.

To create new Monitors on the Advanced Edit dialog box:

  1. From the Reveille Admin console menu, click Edit > Advanced. The Advanced Edit dialog appears.
  2. Select the Monitor, or Monitors, that you want to copy.
  3. Click , then click . The Copy/Paste dialog appears.
  4. Type a name for the new Monitor and click OK. Repeat for each Monitor you copied.
  5. Click Close to exit the Advanced Edit dialog.
