Using the Secure Telnet Wizard

The Secure Telnet wizard helps you add a Resource to a Monitor that tests the features of a Telnet server through a secure Secure Shell (SSH)-enabled connection.

This Secure Telnet wizard supports testing in UNIX®, Linux® or Windows® environments using SSH1 or SSH2 protocols.

To test the features of a Telnet server through a secure SSH-enabled connection using the Secure Telnet wizard, follow these steps:

  1. From the Add Monitor Tests Using Wizard dialog, select Secure Telnet Wizard, and click OK.  The Secure Telnet Email Wizard window appears.
  2. Click Next.  The Settings wizard page appears.
  3. Under Web Server Performing Test, enter the name of the Web server performing the Test.
  4. Under Telnet Server Name or IP Address, enter the name or IP address of the Telnet server to be tested.
  5. Under Timeout, enter the time limit (in seconds) allowed to execute the Telnet command(s) during the recording and playback of the Test.
  6. From the drop-down list under Protocol Type, select one of the following:
    • AUTO. Enables Reveille to automatically discover which SSH protocol you are using.
    • SSH1 or SSH2 manually.
    • RAW.
    • TELNET.
  1. If Authenticate using Private Key is selected, go to step 8.

    -OR-

    If not selected, go to step 13.
  2. Under SSH Private Key File, browse to locate the SSH private key file on your computer or network.
  3. Under User Name, enter the name used to log on to the Telnet server.
  4. Under PassPhrase, enter the phrase used to log on to the Telnet server.
  5. Under Confirm Password, enter the PassPhrase again.
  6. Select Encrypt UserName/PassPhrase to encrypt the log on data in the registry. This prevents the data from being displayed in scripts or other Reveille windows. Go to step 17.
  7. Under User Name, enter the name used to log on to the Telnet server.
  8. Under Password, enter the password used to log on to the Telnet server.
  9. Under Confirm Password, enter the password again.
  10. Select Encrypt UserName/PassPhrase to encrypt the log on data in the registry. This prevents the data from being displayed in scripts or other Reveille windows.
  11. Click Next.  The Test Definition wizard page appears.
  12. Under Resource Name, enter the name of the Monitor Resource associated with the Telnet server Test.
  13. Under Test Description, enter a description of the Telnet server Test.
  14. Select Auto-generate Resource Name to automatically generate the Resource Name based on the Host Name.
  15. Select Use separate scripts for each test if you want to record a different script every time you enter a command.
  16. Select Run Test to run the current Test. The Test Result dialog appears.
  17. Close the Test Result dialog, and click Add Test.  The Secure Telnet Wizard dialog appears.
  18. Click OK, and then click Next. The final page appears.
  19. From the Resource Functions Setup Wizards window, select Secure Telnet Wizard, and click OK. The Reveille Telnet Secure Shell Wizard window appears.
  20. Click Next.  The next wizard page appears.  

From this page, define the following:

  • Web Server. Enter the name of the Reveille Web server.
  • Disable Auto Resource. Select if you want to add more than one resource function to the selected resource.
  • Telnet Server Name or IP Address. Enter the name or IP address of the Telnet server to be tested.
  • Time Out. Enter the time limit (in seconds) allowed to execute the Telnet command(s) during the recording and playback of the resource function.
  • Protocol Type. Select Auto to have Reveille automatically discover which SSH protocol you are using, or you can select SSH1 or SSH2 manually.
  • User Name. Enter the authenticated user name for the selected Telnet server.
  • Password. Enter the authenticated password for the selected Telnet server.
  • Encrypt UserName/Password. Select to encrypt your user ID and password in the registry.
  1. Click Next. The next page appears. Reveille connects to the selected Telnet server.
  2. Enter the commands required to create a resource function.
  3. If you want Reveille to create multiple scripts, click +Pages to record a different script every time you enter a command. If you do not select +Pages, all of your resource functions are included in one script. 

    To start recording, click Start. To pause recording, click Pause.
    When you are finished recording, click Stop.
  4. Click Next. The final page appears.
  5. Click Finish.
