Using the WMI Wizard

The WMI wizard uses Windows® Management Instrumentation (WMI) to query information from local or remote Windows systems to use in a Monitor.  This wizard enables you to monitor devices, memory, processes, services, printers, and so on.

The WMI wizard enables you to set up multiple Tests and Resources in a Monitor. You need to do this if you want to run the Test for this Monitor on the local computer (which is the same computer as the Reveille server) or on a remote computer.

To set-up multiple Tests and Resources in a Monitor using the WMI wizard, follow these steps:

  1. From the Add Monitor Tests Using Wizard dialog, select WMI Wizard, and click OK.  The WMI Wizard window appears.
  2. Click Next.  The Monitor Setup wizard page appears.
  3. Under Web Server, enter the name of the Reveille Web server in order to set up the WMI Monitor.
  4. Select Run Tests on Local Computer if you want to run your Tests on the local computer. Go to step 9.

    -OR-

Select Run Tests on Remote Computer if you want to run your Tests on the remote computer. Go to step 5.
  5. Under Computer Name, enter the name of the remote computer.
  6. Under Domain, enter the domain for the remote computer, if on a different domain.
  7. Under User Name and Password, enter the user name and password for the remote computer.
  8. Select Encrypt User Name/Password to encrypt this data and store the values in the Windows registry.
  9. Click Next.  The next page appears.
  10. Next to WMI NameSpace, select the namespace from the drop-down list. Only one namespace can be used per Test. Select one of the following namespace options:
  • Default. Standard Windows Operating System WMI tests.
  • Windows Clustering. MSCS Cluster WMI tests.
  • Kofax KCS. Kofax Communication Server WMI tests.
  1. Next to WMI Class, select the class from the drop-down list. Only one class can be used per Test. However, multiple Tests can be added to a Resource.
  2. Select the check box next to Property by choosing the appropriate Entry to be used in this Test. This populates Resource Name and Test Description. If you wish to add the WMI test to an existing Resource, replace the Resource Name with the existing Resource Name.
  3. Under Comparison Test, make a selection to be used in the Test from the drop-down list.
  4. The WMI class has multiple entries, such as processes or services. You need to select which property to use as the Primary Key. The Primary Key is found before other property Tests are run on that entry. Using the Primary Key enables you to test if specific entries exist such as processes or services.
  5. Select Turn on Debug Messages if you want debug messages displayed.
  6. Select Auto-generate Resource Name to automatically generate the Resource Name based on the Host Name.
  7. Select Run Test.  The WMI Wizard Status dialog appears showing the Test status. The WMI Wizard Test Result dialog appears, giving the Test result.
  8. Close the WMI Wizard Test Result dialog, and click Add Test.
  9. Click Next.  The final wizard page appears. Click Finish.

The Left Navigational Pane shows the new Resource and Test.
